Politics, as the saying goes, is show business for ugly people. So if you want to add a bit of glamour and beauty to your party, what’s wrong with using a picture of Kate Winslet in your promotional material?

Quite a lot, it seems. The Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, faced embarrassment yesterday after it emerged that his party used a photo of the Oscar-winning actress for an advert in its conference brochure – without obtaining her permission.

KATE Winslet wants to make another film with her husband, Sam Mendes. Kate starred in Revolutionary Road with Leonardo DiCaprio, which was directed by Mendes, but she won her Academy Award for The Reader, directed by Stephen Daldry and backed by Harvey Weinstein’s Weinstein film company.

This led to some highly stressed situations for the 33-year-old actress because, initially, Revolutionary Road was to have had the field to itself.

But Weinstein took a gamble – some saw it as a masterstroke, others had other words I can’t print here to describe it – and decided to release The Reader this season.

Backstage, Best Actress winner Kate Winslet (The Reader) gushed, “It’s just dawning on me now that I’ve won an Oscar. It’s just starting to sink in. Oh my God…And as someone who’s been nominated before, I can tell you winning is really a lot better than losing. Really a lot better.”

When a gossip columnist insisted Winslet give an answer for who she would pass the nude-scene torch to, she took some time and then replied with a glint in her eye, “Susan Sarandon.”

‘Now I’m going to get very drunk’, says Kate Winslet as she takes Best Actress Oscar

It was a triumphant night for British film as heavily tipped Kate Winslet took the best actress Oscar for her role in The Reader, while Slumdog Millionaire swept the board with EIGHT awards this morning.

Dressed in a gunmetal grey one-shoulder gown, Reading-born Kate, 33, managed to hold back the tears as she accepted her award from a group of past winners including Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren.

In her acceptance speech, a composed Kate thanked director husband Sam Mendes, 43, and children Mia, 8, and Joe, 5, for loving her just the way she is.

And she said she planned to get ‘very drunk’.
‘You just don’t think that these dreams that seem so silly and so impossible could ever really come true’, she said backstage at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

With just days to go until Oscar night, Hollywood A-lister Kate Winslet’s mum Sally has told the Evening Post her girl is nervous.

Kate, who is yet to scoop an Oscar despite being nominated six times, is hoping to land the award for Best Leading Actress for her performance in The Reader at the ceremony on Sunday.

Mrs Winslet and her husband Roger – Kate’s dad – told the Evening Post they will be heading from their home in West Reading to LA for the glitzy ceremony.

Mrs Winslet said: “I would really like her to win. Her voters might take into consideration her performance in Revolutionary Road, which she was not nominated for.”

She added Kate sometimes thought being a Brit might work against her at award ceremonies but after a flurry of awards at the beginning of the year they all hoped her time had finally come to win that elusive Oscar.
